The Metal Braces Process

The procedure for getting metal braces will take one visit and then several visits to the orthodontist throughout the treatment. Same-day starts are always an option. 

  1. Consultation: During the consultation, Dr. Oakes will examine your teeth and recommend the best treatment plan for you.
  2. Treatment: Dr. Wendy Oakes will attach the brackets to your teeth and attach a wire to them. The staff will go over the food list and demonstrate proper at-home care techniques for cleaning. The start process takes approximately 1 hour.  Tylenol or Motrin will be needed after the appointment, as well as soft foods for the first few days.  This will help with any soreness or discomfort.

Metal Braces Aftercare

  • Oral Hygiene: Brushing and flossing regularly is best. You will be provided with an orthodontic toothbrush and care items for your braces at the start of the appointment.  
  • Hard objects: Avoid hard, chewy, or sticky foods that can damage your braces or get stuck between brackets. Orthodontic treatment usually lasts 18-24 months for metal braces. It’s essential to follow Dr. Oakes’ instructions and attend all scheduled appointments during this time.

  • Mouthguard: Wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces during contact sports.
